Scientific Achievements in the sphere of work:

Innovative and Original Research Contributions

  • Formulated PSDF based approach for dynamic response analysis of gravity dams to quantify realistically the effect of stochastic nature of seismic excitation.

  • Developed improved formulation for estimating reservoir bottom absorption effects to define more realistic hydrodynamic forces on gravity dams.

  • Implemented Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) approach with several advancements for estimation of site-specific design seismic parameters for important water resources projects.

  • Generated multiple sets of multi-component design accelerograms for safe and economical design of Dibang dam project, Arunachal Pradesh

  • Prepared updated probabilistic seismic zoning map of Maharashtra for assessing the safety of 27 important dams in the state as an aftermath of the Killari earthquake.

  • Evolved improved safety criteria for concrete structures for safety against nearby construction blasting.

  • Developed generalized attenuation relations for different type of rock formations to estimate the safe charges for construction blasting.

  • Estimated for the first time for any dam in the country the dynamic Young's modulus of rubble concrete in Koyna dam to arrive at optimum strengthening requirements of the overflow section.

Guiding Ph. D. Research

  • Recognized as guide for Ph.D. in the field of Earthquake Technology by Poona University for past 18 years and in Civil Engineering by Shivaji University for past 5 years. Following theses have been completed by conducting original basic research under my guidance:

  • Investigation of Response Spectrum Superposition for Stochastic Response Analysis of Structures, December 1997.

  • Investigating Transmission Characteristics of Blast-Induced Ground Vibration and its Effect on Structures, July 1999.

  • Stochastic Considerations in the Dynamic Response Analysis of Concrete Gravity Dams under Strong-Motion Earthquake Excitation, August 1999.

  • Stability Analysis of Underground Openings May 2004.

  • A Stochastic Approach for Torsional Dynamic Response Analysis of Buildings Under Multi-component Earthquake Excitation (in progress).

Applied Research Contributions

Conducted specific research studies for water resources and other important projects in areas of specialization, viz. seismic surveillance, sitespecific design ground motion, dynamic response analysis, NDT for insitu quality of structures, controlled blast studies, and vibration monitoring on hydraulic structures. Prepared more than 145 Technical Reports as Principal Investigator on the studies conducted.
